Every Good Morning

I’m thinking about powerful old men and how often grace abandons them.

Joe Biden has been a very good president. He defeated Trump, and that, above all, makes him worthy of respect. Beyond that, his leadership brought us out of Covid and rescued the economy. He allied himself with Ukraine against Putin. There’s more, but you can do that research yourself.

The first debate showed the evidence that his age has caught him and rendered him ineffectual at best and a danger to the nation as the worst. He does not have the energy to campaign and beat Trump, and beating Trump is all that matters. If Trump wins, we enter an American Dark Age and a Dark Age for democracies, with no guarantee when light will return.

Grace would give him the insight to know now is the time to let go and bow out, to act for the good of all and receive justified praise for an act of real humility, stepping away from immense power.

As I write this, my hope is dying. I think he may have abandoned grace.

So many disasters are swept into life by men’s pride.
