Every Good Morning

I am writing so often because so much is being broken every day. No one can keep up, but what is happening in Saudi Arabia right now is a moral abomination. The United States and Russia are carving up Ukraine.

From today’s New York Times: “Speaking to reporters after the meeting, American officials did not dwell on Russia’s violation of international law in attacking Ukraine, its alleged war crimes or the three years of devastation that Russian shelling and bombardment had wrought in parts of Ukraine.”

And this: “Analysts note that the United States has already granted Russia two major concessions — ruling out Ukrainian membership in NATO and suggesting that it is unrealistic for Ukraine to reclaim all its territory — without receiving anything in return.”

And this: “President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine reacted angrily to Tuesday’s meeting, saying he was postponing his own planned visit to Saudi Arabia — he had planned to arrive on Wednesday — to protest that Ukraine had not been invited to Tuesday’s talks.”

The United States will sacrifice Ukraine, a victim of Putin’s megalomania and aggression, to Trump’s own desire to be seen as a strongman.

Under Trump, we are becoming nothing more than another predatory mafia state, one without allies, one without friends, one ruled by men without any moral scruples. I expect nothing from Republicans, but with the exception of AOC, the silence from national Democrats has been stunning.

Right now, most Americans are downstream of all the effects that are already flowing toward us from the daily destruction of the Federal Government. The effects of the betrayal of Ukraine will eventually be felt here too.

Trump does not believe in any unintended consequences of his decisions. Trump and his acolytes do not believe in cause and effect. They do not believe in hubris. They do believe that they operate outside history and the laws of economics.

They know nothing. Soon, I fear, we shall know so many things we had imagined only took place in countries we would have trouble finding on a map.
